Background

I graduated as a dentist in Rio de Janeiro , Brazil, in 1984; moved to Canada in 1991 when I took the National Board exams in Vancouver . I practiced in Canada until I sold my practice in Victoria in December 1997.

As a dentist I had to deal with issues similar to most practices. To manage a practice is highly demanding by both its aspects: clinical and management. Although the re-organization of my practice was very rewarding, it was exhausting and very time consuming. I wished at that time that I had someone to whom I could delegate some of my responsibilities.

When I stopped practicing, my interest in practice management grew. My dentistry background gives me empathy with the doctor and also knowledge of the workings and pitfalls of a dental practice.

Philosophy

I have a holistic approach to consulting. I believe that a practice is not one of the parts in isolation but the result of good synergy of all of them to produce good dentistry to the maximum number of clients with the minimum amount of duplication or waste of effort.

I offer a hands-on personalized approach towards a practice where all processes are identified and streamlined, the staff are aware of their fields of responsibilities and a team is in place where each of its members is able to cover for another in case of an emergency.

My idea of consulting is not only to help identify problems and design a plan to overcome each one, but most importantly, find the roots of the causes and enroll the staff with the plan of action to fix them. The staff’s acceptance of the plan is essential. However, in order to avoid frustrations and ensure implementation of the plan, it is crucial that staff is supported throughout (e.g. training). This will prevent the same problems from re-occurring assuring long-term success.

My Style

  • action oriented
  • based on practicality
  • workable guidelines
  • intuitive common sense approach
  • motivate, challenge, reprimand and praise
  • inject enthusiasm.

"When I practiced as a dentist, I noticed that attending lectures with my staff was pleasant and the information was easy to understand and mostly common sense. Nevertheless, most of this knowledge was not put to use. In hindsight, this was not a valuable return on my investment."
